What NHL 27 changes on the ice
Six systems decide how a game of NHL 27 feels: skating, puck control, goalies, hitting, shooting and the crowd. Here is what each one does when you are the one holding the controller.
Skating and positioning
ICE-Q reads the play from real NHL EDGE tracking data, so skaters go where a hockey player would go. The practical effect is that your AI teammates stop standing in the wrong place.
Puck control and dekes
Stickhandling lives on the right stick and rewards patience over speed. Protecting the puck through traffic works better than trying to beat someone clean.
Goalies
Goalies track pucks through screens and get across the crease on rebounds. Second chances are worth less than they used to be, which makes the first shot matter more.
Hitting and board battles
Body position decides board battles, not the hit button. Timing a check beats spamming one, and missing takes you out of the play entirely.
Shooting and one-timers
Shooting comes down to release timing and angle. A wrist shot from the slot beats a slap shot from the wall, whatever the power rating says.
Arenas and atmosphere
All 32 arenas were rebuilt with their real goal songs, pre-game routines and a fully overhauled crowd. John Buccigross and Darren Pang call the game over a new broadcast package.

Franchise, Be A Pro, Hockey Ultimate Team and World of Chel all return, and Franchise gets the reveal's biggest addition: Connected Franchise. What follows is what each one is for, and roughly what it asks of you.
Franchise
Run a club for the long haul
You take over as GM and run a club across as many seasons as you like: trades, the draft, prospects, contracts and the chase for the Cup.
- Connected Franchise: share one online league with up to 32 human-controlled teams, with commissioner tools and flexible scheduling. Online franchise has been gone since NHL 14.
- Manage the cap, contracts and player morale season over season.

One skater, rookie to superstar

Everything we know about NHL 27
EA revealed NHL 27 on July 16, 2026 and confirmed far more than usual: the street date, the cover, a new online franchise mode and an arena overhaul. A few things are still missing, and we say which.

- NHL 27 launches September 11, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Deluxe Edition pre-orders play seven days early, from September 4. EA Play members get a 10-hour trial from the same date.
- Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks is the cover athlete, the youngest in series history and the first Shark since Owen Nolan on NHL 2001.
- Connected Franchise lets up to 32 human-controlled teams share one online league, with flexible scheduling, roster management and commissioner tools. Online franchise has not been in the series since NHL 14.
- All 32 arenas were rebuilt with real goal songs, authentic pre-game presentation and a fully overhauled crowd.
- John Buccigross and Darren Pang front a refreshed commentary team, alongside a new broadcast package.

NHL 27 cover athlete: Macklin Celebrini
San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini is on the cover of NHL 27, the youngest player the series has ever put there, after a rookie season that made the choice obvious.
- The Standard Edition cover shows Celebrini in the Sharks white road jersey.
- The Deluxe Edition cover features the teal Sharks home jersey.
- It continues EA's habit of putting a young franchise face front and center.

How NHL 27 ratings work
Every player carries one Overall from 0 to 99. That number is built from dozens of attributes underneath, and which of them matter depends entirely on the position.
Forwards
Speed, Acceleration, Deking, Wrist/Slap Shot Power & Accuracy, and Hand-Eye.
Defensemen
Skating, Stick Checking, Shot Blocking, Body Checking and Defensive Awareness.
Goalies
Glove & Blocker, Positioning, Rebound Control, Agility and Five-Hole.
Heads up: there are no official ratings before launch. Any numbers circulating now are guesses until EA publishes the roster.

NHL 27 controls, in brief

- Skating & passing
- Skate with the left stick, sprint to burst, and pass by aiming with the left stick and pressing the pass button.
- Shooting
- Pull back and release the right stick for wrist and slap shots; time a one-timer as the pass arrives.
- Defense
- Poke-check, stick-lift, switch the controlled skater, and line up body checks with the right stick.
- Deking & skill moves
- Use the right stick to deke, drag and toe-drag, and protect the puck to beat a defender one-on-one.
